An example of a "banner lady." These women were hired by retailers to cover themselves with the items sold by their employers. They were then photographed for advertising purposes. Many would march in "merchants parades," carrying their banners, and sporting their wares.

There is a wonderful genre of cabinet cards in which local ladies were dressed up with objects from a certain trade to advertise their wares. This is one for a bakery, (though curiously it isn't named. ) The woman holds a cake and has a cake or loaf of bread on her head. Her dress is adorned with donuts and cookies, and most surprising-pretzels. This is from an area of Pennsylvania still known for its pretzels. The name in pencil on the verso, "Marie Stover" of Williamsport, may be the model.

"On Feb. 13 and 14, there was given at Sweetser's Opera House, this city, a Merchants' Carnival, under auspices of Episcopalian church. It was by far t…he most elaborate affair of the kind ever attempted in the part of the state. Almost 100 business houses were represented and they vied with each other in the gorgeousness of the display made by the young ladies who represented them, respectively."
